I woke up screaming last night.  I was being chased by a horse with what seemed like a green mohawk and steam (or smoke, it was hard to tell) coming out of its nose.

Okay I’m lying, I just wanted an excuse to share my favourite video game box art of all time which you might remember from one of the first posts on this blog.  Feel free to share some of your favourite (sincerely or not) box art in the comments below.

And for the record horses are actually pretty scary.

I find horses formidable, but not necessarily scary, though their skulls do look quite gruesome.

It’s been a long time since I paid attention to boxart. The digital age be cursed! So my choices will be as old as yours 😀

I like Resident Evil 2 (http://leviathyn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/resident-evil2.gif) and Knights and Merchants boxes (http://whiskeywolf.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/01.jpg). The first one is scary, minimalistic, and really memorable. While the second one is such a nice illustration which fits the game perfectly – not very bombastic but busy. These two are imprinted on my brain.

I’m curious what other people will choose, because there are a lot of interesting boxart out there.

Oh, yeah, good call on Tropico games. They definitely have some fun and fitting boxart.

I also remembered the first Dead Space (http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/ds_eapcpftfrnt-1024.jpg) – it’s such a simple idea, but the resulting art is quite powerful.
